چکیده

background: balantidium coli infects humans, primates and pigs, causing serious diarrhea and dysentery. little information on the prevalence of b. coli in primates is available in china. this investigation was conducted to determine the prevalence of b. coli infection in bred rhesus monkeys in guangxi zhuang nationality autono-mous region (gznar), southern china. methods: a total of 120 fecal samples were collected from rhesus monkeys bred in cages in gznar and b. coli cysts and/or trophozoites were examined microscopi-cally after sedimentation with water in may 2013. results: 77 (64.2%) samples were tested positive. the prevalence was 65% (39/60) and 63.3% (38/60) in female and male monkeys, respectively. 80% (48/60) cages in this nonhuman primate center were positive for b. coli . conclusion: the present survey revealed high circulation of b. coli in bred rhesus monkeys in gznar, which poses potential threats to animal and human health.

Growth of the masseter muscle in rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta).

The growth of the masseter muscle in eight infant, juvenile, and adolescent female rhesus monkeys (M. mulatta) was examined over a 2.5 year period using serial radiographic cephalometric techniques with the aid of radiopaque muscle markers. The radiopaque markers, which are composed of small pieces of root canal broach inserted into the muscle belly, make it possible to determine longitudinal m...

Control of working memory in rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta).

Cognitive control is critical for efficiently using the limited resources in working memory. It is well established that humans use rehearsal to increase the probability of remembering needed information, but little is known in nonhumans, with some studies reporting the absence of active control and others subject to alternative explanations. We trained monkeys in a visual matching-to-sample pa...

Noise-induced cochlear synaptopathy in rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta).

Cochlear synaptopathy can result from various insults, including acoustic trauma, aging, ototoxicity, or chronic conductive hearing loss. For example, moderate noise exposure in mice can destroy up to ∼50% of synapses between auditory nerve fibers (ANFs) and inner hair cells (IHCs) without affecting outer hair cells (OHCs) or thresholds, because the synaptopathy occurs first in high-threshold A...

Gaze following and joint attention in rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta).

Gaze and attention direction provide important sources of social information for primates. Behavioral studies show that chimpanzees spontaneously follow human gaze direction. By contrast, non-ape species such as macaques fail to follow gaze cues. The authors investigated the reactions of rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) to attention cues of conspecifics. Two subjects were presented with videota...
